THE
CITY OF CARCASSONNE As a World Heritage site, this fortified city is unique in Europe. It has witnessed 1000 years of military architecture and 2500 years of history. Occupied as of the 6th century BC, Carcassonne has been a fortified roman city of the Low-Empire, before being a medieval fortress. You can go for a stroll on the walls that dominate the lower part of the city, in the narrow lanes or visit the "Chateau Comtal" (the Count's residence). It is one of the most visited sites in France after the Eiffel Tower and the Mont St Michel, with over 3 million visitors and is still inhabited by the "Ciutadins". It was a natural choice of location for a number of French films, such as Jeanne d'Arc, Les Visiteurs and Robin des Bois. Many events take place in the heart of the City throughout the summer: Knights turnaments, a big festival of music, opera, dance and a medieval show. |
