THE BASTIDE SAINT-LOUIS OF CARCASSONNE

Indeed, Carcassone is not only the medieval city, but also the lower city founded by Saint-Louis during the 18th century. You can still observe the remains of the walls, which used to protect it. It has been called La Bastide, for it is organised like a dame set around the Place Carnot with its Neptune fountain dating back to 1770.
You will find in its heart ancient noble residences, a cathedral, churches, pedestrian shopping streets and an impressive colourful farmers market on Saturday mornings.
The Canal du midi flows through Carcassonne. Right in front of the train station, you can watch boats go through the lock of the Canal port.
In July the "Off" festival, counterpart to the "In" festival taking place in the Medieval City, will animate the streets of the lower town, as will the Spanish Week and the Feria at the end of August.
